Treating Iron in Water

Dissolved iron in water is present in the ferrus state. Except at low pH, ferrous iron is readily oxidized to ferric iron, an insoluble reddish brown precipitate on exposure to air and sunlight. If a water sample is to be tested for iron it has to be free of air and acid added on site (4-5 drops of hydrochloric acid per 100ml), to lower the pH and preserve its iron content in the soluble ferrous state, to allow accurate testing of iron levels in the water sample. It must be noted if a full water analysis is required, a second water sample, without acid added, will be needed.

It is the oxidiised ferric iron, the reddish brown precipitate, that causes problems such as;

  • Building up in and reducing the internal size of pipes and plumbing.
  • Reddish brown staining of pipes, fences, buildings, paths, plants, toilets, tiles, sinks etc.
  • Staining of clothes if used in the washing machine.
  • In irrigation schemes using very small outlets, such as drip emitters, micro sprays and misters, ferric iron causes blockages.
  • Irrigating fruit trees with this water using overhead sprays results in reddish staining of the fruit that cannot be removed.
  • It has been found that iron bacteria flourish in water that contains as little as 0.5 mg/l of iron. The bacteria extract the iron out of solution and convert it , in its digestive process, to a rust coloured sludge, which will block submersible pumps, pipes, filters and outlets.

If this water is to be used in garden or larger drip and micro irrigation systems Good magnetic treatment will prevent Calcium scale and iron build up in the pipes and emitters.

Irrigation and Garden

When bore water has Iron levels in excess of 0.5 mg/l installation of a BioFarm magnetic conditioner tends to accelerate the oxidation of the dissolved iron to form iron oxide. If this water is for irrigation only, magnetic treatment will prevent Iron Oxide build up in the system, the change to the Iron Oxide molecule enables it to pass through the system without building up as a scale or blocking micro sprinklers or drip emitters.

Our magnetic treatment also slowly breaks down any existing iron build up in the system. This process can produce very small flakes and because of this the problem of blocked drip emitters and micro sprinklers may get worse before improving.

Settling - Dam and Tank

Our magnetic treatment not only accelerates oxidation of dissolved iron, it also accelerates settling of the iron oxide. The treated water if allowed to sit in a dam large enough for the water turnover not to be under 7 to 10 days, and if the water is pumped from the dam at the opposite end to the inlet, with a floating foot valve arrangement to draw the cleanest water at the surface, the water should be free of iron. However if there is still some iron in the water being drawn from the dam a conditioner should be installed after the pump to prevent iron build up. A similar arrangement can be used with water tanks for water to be used in hot water systems, laundry and bathroom. It is important the tank be large enough to allow sufficient time for the iron to settle

For situations where no iron is tolerable, and simply must be removed, see HERE for details of the PUREWATER OZONE SYSTEM

Pure Water
Ozone System
The system is capable of treating very bad waters, and the end result is the cleanest water you could ever hope for. No colour. No smell. It's a very easy system to install and to operate, and it's cheap and safe because it's completely natural!

Acidic Water
Treatments
Our acid treatment systems use calcite as media to raise the pH balance to above 7.0. Works with pH balances as low as 5.0. Calcite is an alkaline mineral, which acts as a sacrificial media to reduce acidicty in water.

Drinking Water
Treatments
We carry a range of drinking water solutions to make your water safe!

Ultraviolet (UV) systems as a total minimal-maintenance system that is installed inline to sterilise water completely. All microorganisms, ie. bacteria, fungi, viruses and algae are destroyed on contact with ultraviolet. Much easier than chlorinating, and without that swimming-pool taste.
